[Episode 43] Navigating Ways To Transition With A Disability – An Interview With Ki Hayward

by | Nov 27, 2020

This episode I had a most excellent with my pal Ki Hayward (he/him).

Ki is a lived experience LGBTI/disability advocate and consultant hailing from Geelong. He has had over 8 years activist experience in these areas, with a speciality in housing and the health system.

They are passionate about defending basic human rights that we all deserve within society. Ki is particularly passionate about Disability, LGBTIQ+ Issues, Health, Social Justice and Politics.

Having dealt with extensive health issues over the last few years, he can offer a first hand insight into the grey area between health, disability and in turn the experience of being forced into aged care over six years ago as a 25-year-old.

Ki’s experiences with transitioning is not the story that is commonly heard. The many barriers that every Trans person faces to affirm their identities were amplified by his disability.

And access to affirming medical practices came with the risk of refusal. This is due to the ablest views that many medical practitioners hold.

Because they see a person with a disability as somehow not able to make informed and educated decisions about their own bodies.

Transgender, Gender Diverse and Disability Advocacy

The unique experiences that Ki has had, have allowed him to gain valuable insights across these intersections.

And Ki uses this to help shape change for other people sharing similar experiences. He works with organisations to help create inclusive policies and implement practices designed to create a safer and more accessible space for TGD people, especially those who live with a disability.

You can get in contact with Ki by email him at kirrilydhayward@gmail.com, find him on Facebook at Ki Hayward Consulting or give him call on (+61) 0484 112 850
